The St Mungo Keeping the Clyde clear

Water Safety

With the development and regeneration of the River Clyde and its banks, many more residents and visitors to Glasgow are experiencing the river environment.

Most of the port facilities and associated employment have gone and are being replaced by other developments including housing, hotels, restaurants, bars, clubs and leisure facilities.

Safety matters are of paramount importance in and around the Clyde, as in other waterways.

Glasgow City Council established the Water Safety Working Group to assess areas of risk and work to improve the riverside environment and safety, in and around the River Clyde.

The Action Plan includes:

  • improved lighting along the banks of the river
  • introduction of quay wall ladders
  • introduction of lifebelt provision and help-points
  • development of water safety literature/guidelines
  • provision of appropriate street furniture eg. signage, benches, bins at appropriate locations
  • clean up of the riverbanks and cutback of overgrown foliage
  • clean up of the river flotsum and jetsam involving the purchase of a specialist boat known as the 'St Mungo'
  • clean up of graffiti
  • upgrading the 'Weir' to a tourist attraction
  • installation of booms to reduce the damage to river craft
