Glasgow Against Vandalism
Vandalism costs the City of Glasgow and its partners approximately £10 million per year. The City Council's repair bill resulting from acts of vandalism is in the region of £8 million per annum.
These costs, although alarming, are conservative, since crimes of vandalism often go unreported and statistics do not truly reflect the impact which vandalism has on communities.
In response to the city wide vandalism problem, Glasgow City Council and other key agencies affected by this issue have established a forum to tackle the vandalism issue.
This partnership called ‘Glasgow Against Vandalism’ has developed an Action Plan and is currently delivering elements of this plan.
The aims of this action plan are to:
-
reduce crimes of vandalism in the city
-
reduce incidents of vandalism to Council properties
-
increase anti-vandalism activity citywide
-
increase awareness of the consequences and costs of vandalism
-
reduce the fear of crime within communities
-
encourage community participation and civic pride
These aims will be realised by using the 4 Es:
-
education
-
engineering
-
enforcement
-
encouragement
