The Legal Consequences

If you are convicted of:

  • causing death by careless driving whilst under the influence of drink or drugs
    • the maximum penalty is 10 years imprisonment and banned for at least 2 years

  • driving or attempting to drive whilst above the legal limit or unfit through drink
    • the maximum penalty is 6 months imprisonment plus a fine of £5,OOO and banned for at least 12 months

  • in charge of a vehicle whilst above the legal limit or unfit through drink
    • the maximum penalty is 3 months imprisonment plus a fine of £2,500 and a ban

  • refusing to provide a specimen
    • the maximum penalty is 6 months imprisonment plus a fine of £5,OOO and banned for at least 12 months

Drugs and Driving do not Mix.

Evidence suggests that certain drugs can affect driving ability. Some prescription and over the counter medicine can also impair your driving ability by causing drowsiness or slowing down your reactions.

Always check with your GP or pharmacist if it is safe to drive while taking medication.
