Road safety near schools - Park Wise

In Glasgow, there is an increasing problem near and around schools involving parents dropping off children at their school.

With car ownership on the increase and the parking outside schools limited, children are often faced with the problem of trying to negotiate a "safe" crossing place. More often than not, this results in them having to cross between parked cars.

Statistically we know that one of the main causes of road crashes involving young children is a direct result of crossing and being masked by parked vehicles.

In the past the Road Safety Unit has given schools literature which has been issued to parents advising them of the dangers of thoughtless parking.

Community Police Officers have also previously addressed the problem by monitoring parking during peak times (8.30-9.30am and 2.50pm-3.30pm) and when necessary appropriate enforcement action has been taken.

Usually the presence and action of the officers has been enough to determine parents from dangerous parking. Unfortunately due to limited resources, officers are unable to have a daily presence outside schools.

So please park wisely and safely for everyone's safety.
