Road Safety for Primary School Children

Children of Primary School age should understand the principles of road safety and the dangers of using roads.

Some key points to remember include:

  • ensure that they recognise and know how to use safe places to cross
  • remind them to be careful at all times, including when they are playing
  • be seen at all times
    • wear bright clothing when during the day
    • encourage the use of florescent clothing in poor lighting conditions - armbands or reflective strips on school bags
  • remember that children copy grown ups - encourage good road sense by showing by example

Streetsense is an exciting new approach to teaching road safety in the primary classroom developed by the Scottish Road Safety Campaign (SRSC).
