Under Fives Road Safety
Our aim is to make parents aware of how vulnerable young children are when near roads.
We promote road safety through illustrated talks to parent groups on subjects such as seat restraints and the law, Children’s Traffic Club, and general road safety. As part of our nursery visits, children receive a short talk. However, our philosophy is that children should learn through play, good example and using appropriate resources.
We visit local authority and private nursery schools with videos, activities, books and games about road safety, all packed in a Treasure Chest’. In addition, as part of our commitment to instil good practice from an early age, we provide each nursery with dedicated road safety sacks to be
used in the nursery and at home.

We also promote the Children’s Traffic Club with nursery packs and training for nursery staff in their workplace or in colleges. To encourage road safety, the team liaise with health visitors, hospitals and clinics to publicise the Children’s Traffic Club, and have developed a package for library staff to use with under fives. We also provide child car seat rental schemes at Glasgow’s maternity hospitals.
Story Sacks
We have developed a story sack for nursery children and another featuring the department’s ‘Safe T Rex’ character for use with infant stage pupils.
The aim is to raise young children’s awareness of road safety in a fun learning experience.
The large sack contains books and themed materials to develop a child‘s reading skills and love of books. Children use the story sack at home with their parent/guardian as a home/school link activity or with their teacher.
