Walk to School
Parents and guardians can teach road safety simply by walking their child to school.
What are the benefits of walking to and from school?
- It's healthy - for you, your child and the environment
- Less traffic at the school gate means less traffic danger for children
- It gives the adult an opportunity to teach important, practical skills
- It's less stressful than driving, and saves money on fuel

Each May the Unit raises awareness of these benefits by inviting all primary schools to participate in Walk to School Week.
The Scottish Government recently started to provide funding for new School Travel Co-ordinators who will promote safe and healthy travel for school children and help develop School Travel Plans.
The Walking Bus is a simple idea - groups of children walk on a regular route with parent "drivers" and "conductors". The Walking Bus collects children from 'bus stops' and follows a timetable for the journey to and from school.
