Walking Bus

It is a simple idea - groups of children walk on a regular route with parent "drivers" and "conductors". The Walking Bus collects children from 'bus stops' and follows a timetable for the journey to and from school.

Why have a walking bus?

Walking to school using a Walking Bus can help to:

  • reduce road traffic crashes involving child pedestrians
  • provide a safe and environmentally friendly way to go to school
  • reduce car trips to school
  • learn vital road safety skills
  • improve the health and fitness of children
  • reduce traffic pollution near the school

Can my child's school have a walking bus?

To set up a Walking Bus, you need to:

  • gain a firm commitment from volunteers who will be part of a rota to run the Walking Bus
  • form groups of at least parents who walk from the same area (2 walking the bus + 2 as substitutes)
  • advise the Head Teacher of your school that you plan to organise a Walking Bus
  • finally the Head Teacher will contact the Road Safety Unit who will help set up the Walking Bus
