The Commonwealth Apprentice Initiative (CAI) was developed by the Council to assist suitably qualified school leavers gain an apprenticeship in a wide variety of industries.

Entry Criteria

Young people are not guaranteed any particular apprenticeship and in order to qualify, young people must:

  • Reside within the Glasgow boundary area or attend school in the City
  • Have the ability to pass any relevant selection tests
  • Have the capability to complete other entry requirements
  • Be skilled to progress through an interview process.

There is no assurance that you will secure a permanent post at the end of your training period.

Recruitment

Candidates must now register their interest in applying to the Commonwealth Apprenticeship Initiative by completing an on-line registration form.  Information on how to register can be obtained from your school, local regeneration agency or your local careers office.

Once the initial registration has been submitted, eligibility checks will be carried out and once approved a message will be sent electronically to you with your own unique username and password.  This enables you to then access the webpage to view the latest vacancies and apply for any posts which may interest you.

Applying for a Vacancy

You can apply for more than one vacancy at a time but it is important to remember the reasons why you are applying for this type of work. When you activate the screen to apply for a post, you will be asked for more in-depth information about yourself, your qualifications and your interest in the vacancy chosen.  This is a very important part of the process as any information completed at this stage is forwarded to the employer for their consideration.  It is also important to save a copy of this information so that should you be short-listed for an interview you will have this to refer to if required.

You will be required to complete separate information sheets for every vacancy you are interested in and apply for.

The CAI team will be available for assistance should this be required.

Qualifications

As well as learning new skills that will set them up for life, all successful candidates will work towards an accredited vocational award.  The length and level of study varies dependant on the occupational area and will range from 2 -4 years.   Full details of the qualification will be specified in the training agreement, together with the support which will be offered to help them achieve their training goals, and also the commitment to training that will be expected of them.

Training Agreement

The training agreement is a detailed contract outlining all the information young people will need as one of our modern apprenticeships.  It describes the qualification they will work towards, together with terms and conditions applicable to their contract of employment.
