When the west of Scotland was first heavily bombed in March, 1941, there were 20,000 Scottish school children still evacuated.
Some of their classmates who had stayed at home were killed or injured or had their schools or homes destroyed. A new scheme was organised which evacuated 58,000 school children, most of them from Glasgow.
This time things worked out better because parents, children, the receiving households and the organisers had gained experience and, of course, everyone was now much more aware of the danger of staying in the industrial areas.
