About Us
This website had been created to make accessible some of the rich archival resources that are available for studying various aspects of the home front during the Second World War.
This material was first researched, edited and published by Strathclyde Regional Council in a booklet for schools, but has proved, over more than 15 years, to be of use and interest to a wide range of students and general readers. It is presented now in two sections:
(1) The main site presents annotated original documents and photographs with some background information, for browsing or study. There are 5 sections:
Background
Clydebank
Maryhill
Evacuation
Photo Gallery
(2) A separate Learning Zone contains a smaller selection of sources for use by school pupils in the Pupils section along with quiz questions and a note-taking facility. The Learning Zone also has a Teachers' Page with useful links and an online Poster Pack.
A summary of the contents of the collections within Glasgow City Archives is available on the Scottish Archive Network Web site.
The National Archives of Scotland houses the records of those Scottish Office Departments which had responsibilities during the war. Online catalogues of the National Archives of Scotland are available on The National Archives of Scotland Web site
Clydebank Library has collected copies, original documents and reminiscences of the town’s experiences of bombing. You can find more about the documents held in Clydebank Library on West Dumbarton Council Web site.
