Children are shown how to use the library, how fiction and non-fiction books are arranged, followed by a story/extract and time for the children to ask questions.
The difference between fiction and non-fiction books is discussed before looking at the arrangement of both.
To find fiction books by particular authors, we explain how books are arranged alphabetically according to the author's surname, with children acting as volunteers to demonstrate.
The Dewey decimal system is explained to show how non-fiction books are arranged and how to use the Subject Index.
Children learn how find and analyse information critically, developing necessary 21st Century skills and all sessions are interactive to involve the children fully.
In addition children learn how to look after books, request books etc and find out about the many activities available to them at their local library.
For infant classes we concentrate on finding picture books and simple fact books and getting across key messages about the library and its services.
