Burial Records and Monumental Inscriptions

Burial Records and Monumental Inscriptions held in The Mitchell

Burial Records

The Mitchell holds microfilm copies of the records of some 20 Glasgow cemeteries, from the 18th century to the 1950s. The arrangement is chronological within each cemetery and, unfortunately, there are no indexes.

Additional cemetery registers for Glasgow, along with more recent records, are kept by the Bereavement Services section of Glasgow City Council.

Monumental Inscriptions

Parish registers of burials are particularly defective in Scotland and gravestones are often the only surviving death record before compulsory registration began in 1855.

The Family History Centre holds published monumental inscriptions for many graveyards throughout Scotland.  These are listed here by placename, but if you come in to the library you will find them arranged by county.

Monumental Inscriptions FAQs

Obituaries and Death Notices

The Mitchell has a large collection of newspapers and periodicals, many of which contain obituaries and death notices, but are largely unindexed.

Noteworthy, because of the early period covered, is the Scots Magazine, 1739 – 1833. Each volume (100 in total) contains notices of births, marriages and deaths and is indexed.

Register of Deceased Seamen

Arranged chronologically month by month, this register is available for the years 1886 - 1952. It includes information such as name of ship, case of death, rank and where the seamen came from.
