Directories for Glasgow and other Scottish locations held in The Mitchell

Directories - Glasgow

The first Glasgow directory was published in 1783 followed by others for 1787, 1789, 1790, and 1792 and then annually from 1792 until 1978.

The Mitchell holds the complete set with a few exceptions in the early years.

Volumes include:

  • Alphabetical lists of residents
  • Trades section (added from 1833)
  • Streets section (added from 1845)

Not every person was included; directory entries were usually restricted to professional and business people. These directories are known as the Post Office Directories.

Also available are Kelly’s Directories of Glasgow from 1924 until 1974.

Another useful source are telephone books and yellow pages which are available with some gaps from 1892 and 1929 respectively.
