Evening Times Roll of Honour FAQs
Is everyone who died in World War One included here?
No, the paper printed information supplied to them by the families of the service personnel. It therefore only includes entries for those people whose families sent in information.
Is it only soldiers?
No, sailors, merchant seamen, airmen and some civilians are also included.
Are people only included if they were reported dead?
No, people who were reported missing or wounded are included, as are people who received honours.
Why are some people included more than once?
The information is dependant on what was sent in to the paper, so there may be several entries for the same person. There may be one or more injuries reported, somebody reported as missing, then as killed, then a gallantry award. Often there’s a short notice of a death, followed within a few days by a longer notice with a photograph.
Are only Glasgow people included?
No, while most of the people are from Glasgow, people from other areas of Scotland (within the Evening Times circulation area) appear. The original list of Glasgow people was 5,000 names. This is being revised to include all of the people mentioned; this has been done up to Oct 10 1915 and this latest list has more than 10,000 names.
Why are there portraits for some people and not for others?
Photographs and portraits appear if they were included with the information that was supplied by the families (see Q1 above)
The Mcs and Macs are separated in your list - why is that?
Because of the way they are filed by the computer. You should always check for both spellings.
My ancestor came from Scotland (but not Glasgow) and doesn’t appear in this list. Where can I look for this kind of information about him?
Many local newspapers carried this kind of information during the First World War. Throughout the United Kingdom, local newspapers are usually held by local libraries.
