In 1814, artist/engraver William Daniell set out to record the people and places around the coastline of Britain. His companion Richard Ayton contributed the text to accompany his illustrations.
Eleven years later he had completed his journey, having travelled from Land's End to John O' Groats via the West coast and then returning to Land's End via the East coast. The resulting 8 volumes are acknowledged to be one of finest series of aquatint engravings before the advent of photography.
The Mitchell is fortunate to have a complete copy of the work, as the volumes are often “broken up” by collectors and art dealers and plates sold individually. A complete set of illustrations is available to purchase - a selection of Scottish locations are shown below.
