Clydesdale Horses

Clydesdale horses originated in the Lanarkshire area of Scotland and were bred for their power and stamina.
Before the development of the internal combustion engine, heavy horses were a source of power and there would have been thousands of horses stabled in the City. They were used to pull carts and drays; to transport goods and people; deliver milk; uplift rubbish and they were essential in the parks, carrying out all the tasks we associate with the work of tractors today.
Working horses have long since disappeared from our streets and today Clydesdales are a Rare Breed.
Glasgow City Council however has turned back the clock and once again there are Clydesdale horses in our parks.
We have seven horses stabled at two locations :
- At Glasgow Green you’ll find Ben, Don & Jack
- Pollok Country Park is home to Baron, Duke & TJ.

Today our Clydesdales give dray rides to the public, attend gala days and compete in driving and showing classes at agricultural shows across the country. The horses and dray can be hired for special events.
Visit Glasgow’s own “Gentle Giants” at Glasgow Green and Pollok Country Park and meet a part of history.
