The BIG Project

The BIG project is an exciting opportunity for volunteers to get involved in surveying Glasgow’s green spaces for birds and butterflies.

The British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) Scotland and Butterfly Conservation Scotland have been delighted with the response of the people of Glasgow to the "Biodiversity in Glasgow" (BIG) Project.

Many people turned up to the BIG training days held in various venues in Glasgow and although some people had never taken part in a survey before, all tackled the task with great enthusiasm.

• 72 people were trained to carry out the bird survey.
• 62 people were trained to carry out the butterfly survey.
• 84 sites have been surveyed for both birds and butterflies.
• 108 sites have been surveyed for birds.
• 105 sites have been surveyed for butterflies.

2008 Survey

There is still a second year of surveying to be carried out in 2008 so it is not too late to find out how to participate and get to know the birds and butterflies of your local patch.
