Allotments

Allotments are small green oases, sustaining the social and natural history of the “dear green place” as well as important for the well-being of plot-holders, their families and friends.

The first site established in Glasgow was New Victoria Gardens in 1879, hidden behind a small door in Glenapp St and the newest is the Shettleston Community Growing Project (SCGP) supported by the Shettleston Housing Association.

The history of sites reflect the economic and social concerns of the times with several allotments established in WW1, others in the thirties and in WW2. In the later part of the last century many allotments were lost but those remaining are treasured. Each site is different reflecting the land, the culture and local community. They are an important part of the history and fabric of our city.
