Darnley Mill Park is a Site of Importance for Nature Conservation in the southwest of the City.  Its mosaic of habitats supports a diverse range of animals and plants and provides an attractive area for walks - though some areas may be inaccessible to the public while work to stabilise old mine workings continues

Darnley Mill Park is located in the southwest of the City and west of the M77 (Junction 3) and just south of the Kennishead Road and Nitshill Road junction.

Outstanding Features

  • the park lies in the valley of the Brock Burn and there are attractive walks along both sides of the burn in the northern section
  • habitats include:
    • grassland
    • wetland
    • open water (pond)
    • scrub
    • wooded river valley
  • diverse species in the park including:
    • Dippers
    • Sedge Warblers
    • Reed Buntings
    • Buzzards
    • Orange-tip Butterflies
  • Waulkmill Glen to the southwest of the park is the Site of Special Scientific Interest. This narrow valley is noted for its geology, particularly shale and limestone faces

Facilities
Park Rangers regularly patrol the park

 

History

  • The lands now occupied by the park have a long history. It is believed that in the 12th century they belonged to Robert de Croc who was responsible for the building of Crookston Castle.
  • The lands were later owned by the  Darnley branch of the Royal Stewart family
    • Lord Henry Darnley married Mary, Queen of Scots, in 1565
  • In the 18th century the lands became the property of the Maxwell family
  • The site of Darnley House was in the southwest of the park where its curling pond can still be seen

  • Bus - Regular bus services operate from Glasgow City centre along Nitshill Road
  • Car - From Glasgow city centre travel south along the M77 to Junction 3
    Turn west along Nitshill Road and  
    south into Corselet Road
  • Train - The nearest train stations are Nitshill and Darnley, both approximately 1 km from the park
