Establishing a 'Friends Of' Group

 

Glasgow City Council will always welcome people wishing to set up a new Friends group to help care for their local park, open space, river, cemetery or woodland.
Guidance on Setting up a Friends Group

Glasgow City Council Land Services welcomes the development of new Friends of Parks Groups across the city and can provide a range of support to anyone wanting to establish a group.

Park Development Officers, Park Managers and Park Ranger service can assist in the development of the groups aims. They can support each group through providing advice and guidance with all stages of projects.

Key Steps Involved in Establishing Friends Groups

  1. Identify interested parties.
  2. Try to represent all communities surrounding the park.
  3. Inform Community Councils, Resident groups and societies, Park user groups, Model boat clubs, Bowling clubs and allotment societies etc. Invite members onto a Steering Group.
  4. Set up Steering Group.
  5. The Steering Group should write to Director of Land and Environmental Services to register their interest in setting up a Friends Group.
  6. Director will offer assistance of a Land and Environmental Services Officer.
  7. Make the local Elected Members aware of the group's intent.
  8. The group will identify possible venues for regular meetings.
  9. Establish a constitution and objectives of the group.
  10. Approval of constitution.
  11. Advertise intent to have a public meeting.
  12. First public meeting to discuss proposed constitution, elect office bearers and invite membership.
  13. Management committee group to establish short, medium and long term vision for the park.
