Last year’s show attracted cattle numbers well in excess of 100 with 30 breeders from all over Scotland and as far south as Herefordshire exhibiting cattle. The quality of the cattle forward was outstanding and the numbers exhibited meant the event was the biggest show of highlanders in Britain this year.

Winners

Winning the overall title of Supreme Champion and the Highland Cattle Society Quaich were local breeders and regular exhibitors at the show, father and son William & Tom Thomson, Woodneuk Farm, Barrhead with a seven year old home bred cow Bachy 10th of Woodneuk. The Thomson family has been breeding highland cattle since 1954 and today they run over 200 head at their farm in the Renfrewshire hills high above Glasgow.

The Reserve Overall Champion, Junior Champion and Reserve Female Champion winning the Andy Buchanan Memorial Trophy & International Friendship Cup was 20 month old heifer (young female) Julie 21st of Thaggnam, shown by 13 year old Tom Ward. Tom was showing on behalf of his uncle Gary Braines from Millfield, Sunderland. This is the second year the family has shown at the Glasgow event, being recent newcomers to the highland cattle world.

Her Majesty the Queen’s home bred 20 month old bull, Cliadhamh Mor of Balmoral, won the Male Championship. Affectionately known as ‘Grizzly’ to the Queen and those close to him, this bull has won several reserve championships and male championships at shows across the country this season.

Judge

The guest judge for this year’s show was Dr Stephan Janz from Schnega, Germany. Dr Janz is a well respected highland cattle breeder and judge of international standing.

He said of the event "My judging was a tremendous experience for me, difficult, exhausting and certainly most enjoyable. I was extremely impressed with the overall quality of the animals. Even though the classes were, due to the overwhelming entry, quite big there was hardly a class with an obvious and distinctive poor tail-end. In most classes an excellent quality in terms of character and size went right from top to bottom and the finer differences between the animals were mostly in feet and mobility. My Champion of the day was a very correct strong cow, Bachy 10th of Woodneuk, and she walked with great dignity and style. She was very closely followed by a beautiful and promising heifer who showed that sparkle in her eye that gets us all addicted to the breed.

I cannot say how very much I appreciated the tremendous honour of having been invited as a foreign guest to judge what turned out to be one of the biggest shows of Highland Cattle ever. The Pollok Show has certainly become one of the finest events in the Highland year and I am proud and grateful for the opportunity to be part of it. Thank you all very much."
