International Rose Trials : Tollcross Park

The Rose Gardens cover an area of approximately 1 hectare on a south facing slope overlooking Tollcross Road.

Rose Garden

The garden contains a collection of modern rose varieties and displays their value as free blooming, healthy, colourful flowering plants.

The first plantings took place in autumn of 1986 and each year since then 25 –30 new varieties of Roses have been planted. The main part of the rose garden comprises 16 beds with over 240 varieties, approximately 4100 plants.

New Rose varieties are submitted by Rose Breeders and Rose Growers from various countries and the garden provides an opportunity to assess new varieties growing in climatic conditions common to Glasgow and the West of Scotland.

Rose Trials

New rose varieties are planted each year and once established, the roses are regularly inspected by a panel of experts. Over two summers the roses are assessed for their health, beauty of flower, freedom of bloom, and general effect.

International Panel

Each August an International Panel of rose experts carries out the final assessment of varieties on trial. The International Panel includes rose growers and enthusiasts from various countries.

Best Established Rose - A special award, provided by the Incorporation of Gardeners of Glasgow is made to the most meritorious rose variety established within the trials for ten years.

The Peoples Choice - Members of the public are also involved in judging the roses. Each year the title of ‘The People’s Choice’ is awarded to the rose variety receiving most votes in a competition in which visiting members of the public can nominate their favourite among the roses on trial.

Visiting the Rose Garden

Roses start to flower in June and continue to produce flower until late autumn. They are at their most colourful in July and August. Each rose bed has its own plan detailing the rose varieties growing in the bed.
