The Restoration of the Stewart Memorial Fountain

The restoration of the Stewart Memorial Fountain in Kelvingrove Park is now complete.

Introduction

The Stewart Memorial Fountain, erected in 1872, commemorates Lord Provost Stewart of Murdostoun who was instrumental in the delivery of Glasgow's water supply system from Loch Katrine

Restoration

The Restoration works to the Stewart Memorial Fountain were completed in October 2009.

An unveiling ceremony took place on the 14th October 2009 - the 150th anniversary of the opening of the first sluice gate at Loch Katrine.

The restoration incorporated a water recycling system which will prove more environmentally friendly.  There are also be more extensive repairs to the stonework and the reintroduction of the cherubs missing since the 1930s.

Works

The contractor, Hunter and Clark, has considerable experience. They were the main contractors for the Doulton Fountain on Glasgow Green.

Interpretation proposals are in place which will provide an education pack for Glasgow's schoolchildren.  A heritage leaflet about the fountain and the Loch Katrine project has also be compiled.  A time capsule is also proposed containing artefacts relating to the fountain and to the City of Glasgow in 2009.
