Community Action Teams:  What We Do

Detailed below are examples of the work undertaken by the area-based teams.

Whiteinch Boys’ Environmental Arts Project
This project was originally part of the HoldYourBreath(HYB) initiative, which worked with a group of teenage boys to develop a series of large-scale artworks. The boys worked with an urban artist to produce images that reflected their personalities and their immediate environment. The group exhibited their work as part of the HYB initiative – The Whiteinch Cross Open Day. Elected members, communities, local agencies and the boys themselves deemed this very well attended event a great success.

Drumchapel Fun Run
This event aims to improve the health and well-being of the local community by encouraging people from Drumchapel and the West to participate in a 5k Fun Run. The event is supported by a range of agencies both from the voluntary sector and public bodies.

Easy Spanish for Pre-Fives
Easy Spanish aims to encourage family learning to improve, support and develop the core communication and play skills of pre-five year old children and parent/carers through participating in family learning. Through activities including play, art and music sessions, children are introduced to Spanish songs, games, numbers and colours in a fun and informative way.

Fusion Project
In partnership with the City Halls, this project aims to make music accessible to teenagers from black and minority ethnic communities who are not currently engaged in the arts. The two projects, which run for three months, will provide creative music workshops one night a week, with the possibility of the young people taking part in a concert in the City Halls.

Integrated Leisure and Arts Classes
There is a consensus of opinion that disabled children and young people find it difficult to interact with their peers in their community due to a number of issues. These include attending school in other parts of the city, existing provision which does not supply adequate support in staffing numbers or expertise, and parents' lack of confidence in social acceptance of their children. To address these barriers, the Community Action Team is involved in interconnecting strands of the development of integrated leisure and arts provision for disabled children.

Leithland Integrated Mega Club
The Leithland Integrated Mega Club holiday programme comprises of play, arts, music and drama for 5 to 12 year olds. These activities are for children with disabilities, their brothers, sisters, and local children.  The partners include the Community Action Team, Play Services, Social Work Services and many other Culture and Sport and Glasgow City Council departments. The programme is delivered during spring, autumn and summer.
