Economic and Social Initiatives


The Council’s Development and Regeneration Services is the department which is responsible for the delivery of the many policies and activities which fall under the broad heading of Economic and Social Initiatives. 

These include:

  • Strategy and strategic projects including the economic development strategy for Glasgow, the Glasgow Tourism Strategy, Metropolitan Vision, inward investment and city collaboration.
  • Performance improvement which includes the provision of economic data and the monitoring and evaluation of SIB programmes.
  • Employability covering employment and training initiatives, social economy project development, anti poverty initiatives and financial inclusion.
  • Social Initiatives which is responsible for the development, management and monitoring of a range of programmes including SIB and the financial inclusion strategy.
  • Funding and resources which includes accessing external funding for Council projects, policy development and advocacy work to influence the size and procedures of these funding streams to maximise the benefits for the city.
  • Business finance, support and advisory services focusing on the Glasgow City Business Loan fund (West of Scotland Loan fund), The Supplier Development Programme, Glasogow4Business, Business Challenge Fund and Step Change for Glasgow.
  • Training grants subsidy for companies to install management and technical skills for employees, manager and owners in their business through the Glasgow Business Training Support Programme.
