How we work out your Council Tax
Most households have to pay Council Tax, with a few exceptions.
There is one bill for each household and the amount you pay depends on the value of your property, as worked out at 1 April 1991. The Assessor puts each property into one of eight valuation bands, A to H, with band A being the lowest-value band and band H the highest.
Once we know how much money we need to raise from Council Tax, we work out the average charge and set it as the ‘band D’ figure. We then use a formula called the ‘multiplier’, which is set by the Scottish Government, to work out all the other bands.
The amount of Council Tax you pay is based on the Council Tax band your home has been matched to.
You can check on-line which band your home has been matched to by visiting the Assessors' Web Portal or view your personal account details through our eCitizen system.
Appealing against your Council Tax band
If you have just bought or moved into a property and you do not agree with the Council Tax band it has been given, you can appeal within six months of buying or moving into the property.
If the Assessor alters the Valuation List by making a new entry or changing the value, you must make your appeal within six months of the date of the Valuation Notice.
All appeals must first be made, in writing, to the Assessor. You must continue to pay your Council Tax instalments until the Assessor has considered your appeal and given you the outcome in writing.
