What is Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit?

 

These are means tested benefits payable to people who are responsible for paying Rent or Council Tax based on the:-

  • Amount of money you receive
  • Amount of savings and investments you have
  • Circumstances of people who live with you

Claiming benefit for the first time may seem complicated so we have tried to make it easier. You can:-

Telephone us on  0141 287 5050.  We will go through a short series of questions with you.

 

We will be able to give you an estimation of benefit entitlement based on your circumstances.

We can then arrange an interview for you at your local Revenues & Benefit Centre and advise you of the evidence that you should take along in support of your claim.

Or

Under certain circumstances you can ask for a Home Visit to help you complete your application form and collect the information we require.

Download our application form (pdf, 519K, 20 pages) and guidance notes (pdf, 175K, 36 pages).  You will need to complete the form by hand and return it to us by post.  This may take us longer to process if you have not provided everything we need or completed the form correctly, please ring us on 0141 287 5050 if you require any guidance when completing the form.

Or

Drop in to see us at the local centres to make a claim. No appointment is necessary, however, you can book a new claim interview via our telephone unit on 0141 287 5050 to avoid waiting.

Our offices are open Monday to Friday 9.00 to 4.30.

Remember Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit are means tested benefits so evidence may be required regarding your identity, income and capital.  We will advise you about this when you contact us.

 


Additional Help


Benefit is normally awarded from the Monday following the date you contact us. Under certain circumstances benefit can be backdated.  So don’t delay – apply today.


A Discretionary Housing Payment may also be available for claimants who are not entitled to full benefit.  (British Sign Language version available)
