Historic Buildings

Historic Scotland provides some grant funding for essential repairs to properties of architectural and historic interest.

The Historic Buildings Repair Grants Scheme provides funding for a range of repair projects.

This fits into Historic Scotland's aim of promoting the use of traditional materials and specialist craftsmen to conserve original features in buildings of special architectural or historic interest.

The criteria for eligibility include:

  • the building must be of sufficient outstanding architectural or historic interest, or make a significant contribution to the character and appearance of an outstanding conservation area
  • the building must be at serious risk from neglect or repair
  • the need for grant for repairs must be demonstrated
  • the project must be financially viable and there must be an appropriate and sustainable final use.

There are also conditions attached to the granting of funds:

  • advice from a suitably qualified professional is required, to provide details of what is required and how the work will be undertaken
  • there must be a degree of public access to the building when the work is complete
  • there must be ongoing maintenance and insurance of the building.

Grants are normally provided for a minimum of 25% of the cost of the eligible work, and do not normally exceed £500,000. The minimum eligible amount is generally £5,000 excluding fees and VAT. The grant must be agreed before work starts.
