Private sector grants

Private sector grants

In order to ensure that the standard of privately owned housing in Glasgow is maintained or upgraded, Glasgow City Council can provide private sector housing grants for certain works.

These grants are provided on a discretionary basis by the Council. Contact the Private Sector Unit to discuss the details of the work that is proposed and the eligibility for grant funding.

Priority is generally given to:

  • statutory notices (section 108 and section 162 notices)
  • housing action area repairs
  • installation of standard amenities to meet the tolerable standard

The maximum expense eligible for these grants is generally £20,000, and the proportion of grant varies according to the work required and the financial circumstances of the applicant. (Further information about means testing ).

You may also need to get planning permission or a building warrant for work being carried out. The property owner is responsible for finding out whether this is necessary, and ensuring the work is carried out to a satisfactory standard.

For more details contact:

Planning permission: Development and Regeneration Services, Development Control, telephone 0141 287 8555.

Building warrant: Environmental Protection Services, Building Control, telephone 0141 287 5937.

For further guidance on how to apply, see the Housing Alterations page.

Points to remember

Demand for grant funds is always greater than the funds available, and this may lead to delay in processing applications.

Grants are not available retrospectively - approval must be given by the private sector division before works start.

There is a £50 legal/administration charge for grant applications, which is deducted from the grant awarded.

For more detailed information about private sector grants see the information and notes on Private Sector Grants Applications .

A leaflet is also available from the Scottish Executive that provides information on Improvement and Repair Grants .
