International work
Through a programme of international education, we are striving to raise young people's awareness of their own situation in relation to that of others. This will enable young people to play an active role politically, socially, culturally and vocationally in an increasingly multi-cultural and international society.
A contact group has been established to support developing partnerships between the council, the voluntary sector and young people. This group will provide information, support and training to groups and organisations interested in international activity. We are currently seeking nominations from young people to participate in the group and at the same time widen the representation from the Voluntary Sector. The group are currently looking at opportunities to promote international work to a wider audience and it has been suggested that a repeat of the Scottish Wide event held in the Royal Concert Hall in partnership with Cultural and Leisure Services, Youthlink and the British Council is considered.
Programmes have continued to develop and each of the eight youth service areas have offered an international activity each year, most involving a group activity abroad although some using the theme of international education to promote citizenship within youth clubs in their area. A second programme is planned with Uganda, following on from the success of the 2004/05 activity. This year the Duke of Edinburgh programme is being done in partnership with colleagues from Education Service and 12 young people from Castlemilk Secondary School along with teaching staff will participate.
Finance to support these programmes is available through a variety of different sources including the British Council, the Commonwealth Youth Exchange Council, Education Services, Department of Regeneration Services and Cultural and Leisure Services, with streams of money available to support most initiatives.
