Sports Person of the Year Awards, November '07

Report by Robin James MSYP

Award winner with MSYPs H Lynn and R James

At the end of last month, I was lucky enough to attend the Glasgow Sports Person of the Year Awards in Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum.

Not only was I able to attend, but I also presented the award to the Glasgow Young Sports Person of the Year, sponsored by Glasgow Young Scot Card. The winner was 18 year old badminton star Kieran Merrilees who represented Britain at the Youth Olympics in Sydney, as well as finishing first on the Under 19’s European singles circuit. To add to his success, Kieran was crowned Glasgow Senior Men’s Singles Champion earlier this year.

The event was black-tie with everyone looking very smart and polished, which added to the importance of the evening. We were served a beautiful meal and had time to rest while watching the awards – ranging from Glasgow Sports School of the Year to the ultimate, Glasgow Sports Person of the year; won by Scots cyclist Chris Hoy who has both Olympic and Commonwealth glory!

The event was a fantastic recognition of Scotland’s sporting success; as well as a celebration for Glasgow in winning the host city for the 2014 Commonwealth Games!
