COUNCILLOR LIZ CAMERON MA

  

 

Councillor Liz Cameron was unanimously appointed Lord Provost for four years in May 2003.  As Lord Provost she is also the Lord Lieutenant of the City of Glasgow i.e. she is the Queen’s representative in Glasgow.

 

Liz Cameron is a Glaswegian.  She was born in Partick and graduated from Glasgow University with an MA Honours Degree in English Language and Literature.  She has lectured in both Adult and Higher Education Colleges including Bell College of Technology in Hamilton.

 

She was first elected to Glasgow District Council in 1992, re-elected in 1995, 1999 and 2003 to the new City Council, representing the Knightswood South ward.

 

Lord Provost Liz Cameron has held a number of council offices.  She was Deputy Convener of the Council’s Women’s Committee 1993-1995 and, after local government reorganisation, was Deputy Convener of the new City Council’s Arts and Culture Committee from 1995-1998 before becoming Convener from 1998-2003.  As Convener she was actively involved in bringing together libraries, art galleries and museums, arts, theatre and music, sports and leisure and community learning into one new Department of Cultural and Leisure Services.  She led a number of best value reviews into the services.

 

Under her leadership, the City Council agreed the £26 million Kelvingrove Refurbishment Programme, the opening of Nitshill Open Museum, a major programme for the City Halls and the establishment of 26 Life Long Learning Centres in City Libraries.  She actively promoted sports and leisure initiatives which helped the city gain the title European Capital of Sport 2003.

 

Lord Provost Cameron is actively involved in a number of cultural organisations, including Scottish Chamber Orchestra, the BT Scottish Ensemble, the Children’s Classic Concerts and the Centre for Contemporary Arts and was previously the Chair of the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall.

 

She is President of the Culture Commission Confederation of Cities of the Atlantic Arc and Vice Chair Les Rencontres Association of European Cultural Cities.

 

Since 1999 Lord Provost Cameron has been a member of the Scottish Arts Council and was appointed a member of the National Galleries Board of Trustees in January 2003.
