Councillor Biography
Gordon Matheson joined Glasgow City Council in May 1999, as the elected member representing Merchant City ward. During his first term, he was the Council's spokesperson on Community Councils. He also developed a keen interest in the work of Cultural and Leisure Services, serving on the committee and joining both the board of Royal Scottish National Orchestra, and the City's contemporary-art purchasing panel.
After re-election in May 2003, Gordon Matheson was appointed a Bailie of the City and a Justice of the Peace. He was also appointed convener of Central Area Committee, and a member of Strathclyde Joint Police Board. In May 2005, Bailie Matheson was elected to the Executive of the administration Labour Group and was appointed Vice Convener of the Education Services Committee.
Bailie Matheson is a graduate of both Glasgow and Strathclyde universities, is a chartered member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. He is also employed by Royal National Institute of the Blind, Scotland as the charity's Parliamentary, Policy and Press Manager.
In his 'spare' time, Bailie Matheson lists attending theatre and eating-out among his hobbies. He also states that he copes with his busy schedule by taking his full complement of annual leave and holidaying in the sun whenever possible, especially in Italy! In 2002, he ran both the Great Scottish Run and the New York Marathon.
