Strathclyde Fire and Rescue Board is the Fire Authority for the West of Scotland as defined in the Fire Services Act. The Authority encompasses the areas of the 12 councils of the former Strathclyde Regional Council area.
The Fire Services Act requires local authorities in the UK to make provision for an effective fire service that 'will be responsible for fire fighting and rendering humanitarian services'. As well as maintaining an effective fire service, the Fire Authority must also provide for its training and for the provision of fire safety advice on request. In addition to the Fire Services Act, the Fire Authority is also responsible for administering other United Kingdom, Scottish Executive and European Union laws and regulations, such as the Fire Precautions Act and the Workplace Regulations.

There are 34 members of the Board, eight members are appointed by Glasgow City Council, four each are appointed by North Lanarkshire and South Lanarkshire Councils and two each are appointed by the remain nine councils in the Strathclyde area.
