Eurocities network was created in 1986 by major local authorities in order to enable them to exchange ideas and resources and develop their common ideas and resources and develop their common interests in Europe. The principle behind the network was that large towns are the driving force behind economic development and social, cultural and technological innovation. This network counts amongst its members 64 towns from the European Union, along with some cities from non-member States such as Switzerland, Poland, the Czech Republic, Romania and Norway.
