The Rostov Region is located in the southern part of the East-European plateau. It lies partly in the North Caucasian Region, covering a vast territory in the basin of the Don River. The Rostov Region has 23 cities and 39 districts. The administrative centre of the Region, Rostov-on-Don is the largest city in the south of Russia, with a population of 1,100,000.

Considered as a Russian ‘Gateway’ to the Black Sea and the Caspian countries, the Rostov Region has developed a transport infrastructure including waterways, railways, roads and Rostov International airport. These communication lines help the region’s ports to specialise in handling a number of resources including mineral and construction materials, as well as dry, general and container cargoes.

The development of the economy in the Don Region originates from the rich natural resources. Eighty per cent of regional output is related to fuel and energy. Timber, woodworking and paper industries, light industries, housing construction, machine building and food industries are the principal branches of the regional industry.
