Situated on the banks of the Po River, near the foot of the Alps in northwestern Italy, Turin is one of Italy’s most important industrial and communications centres. The city is the capital of the Piemonte region and has a population of 952,736.

 

Turin has a major road and rail network and an international airport. The city is the biggest in Italy’s automotive industry, with Fiat and Lancia plants producing more of the national output of automobiles. Aeroplane, ball bearing and rubber and paper industries are also important, as are tanning and leatherworking. The city is also noted for its chemical, plastics and electrotechnical industries, as well as chocolate and wines.
