Education Services Performance Assessment

The general picture continues to be one of steady improvement. Some key points are as follows:

 

Pre-school Provision:

The percentage of Glasgow children recorded as being in grant-aided pre-school places in 2003/2004 was 83% for 3 year olds, which was slightly lower than the previous session

The percentage of 4 year olds receiving grant-aided pre-school education in 2003/2004 was measured at 100%, which is 10% more than session 2001/2002

 

Please note that there are places available for all 3 and 4 year olds whose parents wish it


 

Class size/school occupancy:

The average number of pupils per class in primary schools is 24. This is equivalent to the national average 

Occupancy rates in the Primary sector are improving as a result of the Pre-12 Strategy.  Quality accommodation for Pre5 and SEN establishments have also been provided

 

Occupancy rates in secondary sector are excellent.  Project 2002 in the secondary sector is complete and is now on a maintenance and life cycle basis

 
 
National Test Results 5-14:

Primary Sector

  • Reading attainment improved by 2% in 2005/2006 - it is now at 80%
  • Writing attainment improved by 3% in 2005/2006 - it is now at 73%
  • Mathematics attainment improved by 2.8% in 2005/2006 - it is now at 84.8%

 

Secondary Sector

  • Reading performance has increased in each of the last 3 sessions to a level of 55.8%
  • Writing performance reached its highest ever. In 2005/2006 improvement was increased by 3.2% to a level of 46.9%
  • Mathematics performance improved by almost 9% between 2004 and 2006 to a level of 55.6%
 
 
Performance within the Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework (SCQF):
  • In S4, all performance outputs were better than performance in previous sessions
  • S5 attainment was below previous levels
  • S6 performance levels were either greater than or equal to previous sessions

 
Attendance and Absence:

Primary schools
In session 2005/2006, primary schools attendance was 93.2% - an improvement of 0.5% on 2004/2005.  Nationally, primary attendance was the same as the previous sessions at 95%

 

Secondary Schools
This is the sixth year that Glasgow secondary schools have improved their attendance. Over the past  four years, the number of half days lost through absence has decreased from 61 to 48. This improvement is unlikely to be equalled by any other authority

 

In session 2005/2006, secondary attendance was 87.2% - an improvement of 0.5% on the previous session

Exclusions:

There was a slight increase in exclusions from Glasgow schools in session 2005/2006, which was in line with the national figure.  The increase in the Glasgow exclusion rate between sessions 2004/2005 and 2005/2006 was from 105 to 106 exclusions per 1000 pupils

School Leaver Destinations:

The school leaver destination figures for the 2006 session show improvements across the range of destinations beyond school for young people in Glasgow.

 

48% of leavers entered Higher or Further education and 12% entered training
