Prostitution is recognised as male violence and one form of commercial sexual exploitation. Street prostitution is a significant social problem in Glasgow, which affects women, families and communities. As with other social problems it is recognised that public agencies have a role to play in tackling the causes and the impact of prostitution.

Staff leaflet on prostitution policy
The Council aims to raise general awareness of employees about the nature of prostitution and promoting the view of it as survival rather than sexual behaviour. A leaflet aimed at staff and outlining Council policy and expectations of staff has been disseminated to all 34,000 staff working for the Council.
Trafficking report
This report highlights the nature and extent of trafficking for the purpose of prostitution and the current legal and policy framework. It recommends the establishment of a short-term officer-working group to draw up a report outlining proposals for action by the Council and other partners.
Good practice guidance on working with women involved in prostitution
The Council aims to raise general awareness of employees about the nature of prostitution and promoting the view of it as survival rather than sexual behaviour. The Council commissioned the Women’s Support Project to draw up good practice guidance for use in Glasgow. It was adapted from one published by the Franki Project.
Tolerance Zones
The Council submitted written evidence to the Scottish Local Government Committee in its consideration of the Prostitution Tolerance Zones (Scotland) Bill in 2003. The Committee did not support the Bill and a review of prostitution legislation is now underway.
Report re licensing of lap dancing/table dancing clubs
This report was submitted to the Executive in 2002 and requested a review of the licensing of venues providing lap dancing or table dancing. It recommended that such venues be classed as sex shops and licensed accordingly.
