Equalities
The Council is committed to the social inclusion of groups of citizens who are marginalised and who experience discrimination. Our equality work will prioritise the following groups:
- women
- black people and those from ethnic minorities (including gypsies, travellers, asylum seekers and refugees)
- disabled people
- lesbians and gay men
- older people and younger people
- faith communities
Council policy is determined by the Council's Executive Committee. Councillor Irfan Rabanni is the Council's spokesperson on equalities issues. In addition, each of our Policy Development and Scrutiny Committees has equalities included in its core remit.
The Council has a team of corporate policy officers who specialise in equalities issues. It also has a range of action plans and other initiatives in place to translate policy into practice.
The Equality Networks Forum, enables representatives of equalities groups to meet regularly with the Council and provides opportunities to influence policy and service development.
The Council-funded Equality Bulletin is produced several times a year on behalf of the Equality Networks Forum.
