As part of its input to the current debate on local government and the role of councillors, Glasgow City Council commissioned research into the role of councillors. The Council’s Corporate Policy section, in conjunction with MORI (Scotland), undertook the research study in Autumn 2003. The study has three elements:
- a 3 week diary exercise completed by 54 councillor recording activities and the time commitments
- in-depth interviews with a number of councillors exploring their motivations and experiences as councillors
- questions to members of the Glasgow Citizens’ Panel on issues such as councillors availability, responsibility and remuneration
The full report illustrates well the commitment required of a councillor today on Scotland’s largest city. It shows that Glasgow councillors are committed to working hard for the benefit of their constituents and the city as a whole and that Glasgow’s citizens have high expectations of their councillors in terms of their availability, hours worked and the nature of the duties they undertake.
