Service objectives

 

The principal strategic objective of Direct and Care Services is to provide high quality services which are considered value for money to the residents of Glasgow as outlined in Glasgow City Council’s corporate aims and objectives. We aim to:

  • break even on all statutory services as required by legislation and achieve the budgetary return determined by the council
  • continue to demonstrate a commitment to best value in all departmental activities
  • implement an all-encompassing approach to consultation with stakeholders
  • maximise all business opportunities in order to improve overall financial viability
  • invest for the future through the continuous development of staff

Direct and Care Services employs over 9000 staff making us the second largest employer within Glasgow City Council. We provide services to other council departments, public bodies throughout the city and private companies and individuals.

Services provided include:

 

Education

 

On a daily basis catering, cleaning and janitorial services are delivered in over 300 schools and other educational premises. The department has also been awarded the contract for facilities management in seven of the city's newly built primary schools.

 

Glasgow’s Fuel Zone concept has seen the complete modernisation of the primary and secondary school catering service to include a new, modern look and feel including the introduction of exciting initiatives such as Glasgow’s Big Breakfast which provides a free breakfast to all pupils, the Fruit Plus project that integrates fruit into the curriculum and Glasgow’s Refresh, which gives children access to fresh, chilled water throughout the school day.


 

Home care

Traditional home care services and the more recent overnight help, hospital discharge service and handyperson services help ensure that 8600 Glaswegians have a better quality of life. These services are provided on behalf of Social Work Services. Direct and Care Services have also recently assumed responsibility for the management of the community alarm centre and provision of care services for homeless persons in supported accommodation.

 

Corporate hospitality and event management

 

Encore Creative Catering provides a one-stop-shop catering and hire service for some of Glasgow’s most impressive and unique venues. Encore is responsible for managing events including banquets and weddings.

 

Encore also provides all staff catering, and catering in sports facilities and museums  across the city. These include the historical city chambers, the internationally renowned Burrell Collection and the recently refurbished Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum (click here for sample menu).

 

Community

 

Many of the services are delivered direct to those living in the Glasgow community. Meals are served to the elderly via direct delivery or lunch clubs. Cleaning is also provided within homes for older people, children’s residential units and sheltered housing complexes. Glasgow’s environment is also serviced with Landlord Services cleaning general common close area’s for Glasgow Housing Association groups.

The Greater Glasgow Independent Living Equipment Store (GGILES) is a stores and distribution centre for living equipment and aids.
