Employee Benefits

Glasgow City Council employees have access to a wide-ranging and generous benefits package.  If you're successful in your job application you'll have access to these benefits, which include:

Annual Leave and Public Holidays

Our employees are able to take advantage of 28 days annual leave from the first year of employment.  On top of this they also receive 12.5 days public holidays per year.

This means that as a minimum our employees receive 40.5 days holiday per year.  (These entitlements are based on full-time hours.  Part-time entitlement would be reduced based on the number of days worked to give a pro-rata entitlement.

Pension Scheme

New employees automatically have the opportunity to join not only one of the largest local authority pensions funds in the UK, but also a fund which ranks among the top 20 of all UK pensions funds - Strathclyde Pension Fund.

The scheme is also one of the few remaining 'final salary schemes' with generous contributions based on pensionable pay.  Benefits of the scheme include:

  • A pension based on your final salary.
  • A pension that increases each year in line with price inflation.
  • A pension payable to your surviving spouse, registered civil partner or nominated cohabiting partner on your death after retirement.
  • The ability to exchange some of your pension to provide a tax free lump sum.
  • Lump sum death in service protection of three times your pay.
  • A pension for your surviving spouse, surviving registered civil partner or surviving nominated cohabiting partner on your death in service.
  • A permanent ill health pension paid from any age for those with two years service who are permanently unable to work.

You can find out more about it at www.spfo.org.uk/

Life & Personal Accident Insurance

For employees who opt out of or who who choose not to join the Pension Scheme, we also have a free employee Life Assurance Scheme, which provides dependants of our employees with one years' salary, with a minimum payment of £5,000, in the event of their death.

In addition to this we provide our employees with Personal Accident Insurance for free, meaning that if they were injured due to an accident at work they could receive financial compensation.

Occupational Sickness Pay

We have an occupational sick pay scheme, where depending on length of service, our employees could receive up to 26 weeks full and half pay.  This is in addition to any entitlement to Statutory Sick Pay.

We also recognise our responsibility for the health, safety and welfare of our employees and have a wide range of free services such as Occupational Health and Physiotherapy.

Staff Benefit Scheme

Our staff benefit scheme is open to all Council employees and provides preferential discounts on selected products and services throughout Glasgow.  This includes high street shops, restaurants, hotels and holidays.

Give As You Earn (GAYE)

Give as you earn is a tax efficient way of giving to your chosen charity through your pay. You can give as much or as little as you like, and because the donation is taken from your pay before tax, it actually costs you less and ensures that your charity receives more from the gift aid entitlement.

Employee Assistance Resource

There may be times when employees need advice, guidance or simply wish to talk to someone about things going on in their life.  That's why we make our Employee Assistance Resource free to all our employees.  This provides our employees with access to confidential, professional counselling, information services debt management and legal help 24 hours per day, 365 days per year.  This service is also open to our employees' family.

Work Life Balance

To help employees balance the demands of work and home, employees with 26 weeks continuous service have the right to request flexible working with options including job-sharing, term time contracts and compressed working hours.

We also offer a whole host of family friendly policies with generous entitlements going well beyond legal requirements.  These include maternity leave, maternity support, adoption, parental and fostering leave.

Childcare - Salary Sacrifice Scheme

To help our employees with childcare costs we offer a Childcare Voucher Scheme managed by Kiddivouchers.

This works by allowing employees to take an amount from their salary before tax and national insurance contributions and using that to pay for registered childcare.  This means that our employees save money by paying less tax and national insurance.

Glasgow Credit Union

Employees can join Glasgow Credit Union (GCU), a not for profit financial co-operative.  The GCU provides a variety of competitive financial services including current accounts savings, mortgages, loans and insurance services.

Glasgow Club

Our employees can join the Glasgow Club, Scotland's largest health and fitness club operating at 19 centres throughout the city with 12,000 members.  Employees benefit from a discounted rate, which includes a reduction of almost one third in the monthly subscription fee and the administrative fee being waived.

Staff Magazine

Every month employees receive a copy of our excellent staff magazine, 'Insider', which is crammed full of information about the Council, offers available to employees, competitions and details of vacancies available throughout the council.

Employee Development

We believe that providing staff with increased skills, knowledge, qualifications and competence will ultimately lead to our customers receiving a better service and our employees feeling more motivated and engaged.  As a result we are proud to offer a wide range of developmental opportunities to our employees, including:

  • Corporate training, including the Institute of Leadership and Management First Line Managers Programme
  • SVQ accreditation
  • Support whilst completing Further Education
  • Completion of Personal Development Plans that support individual development and career progression.
