Supply Teaching for Glasgow City Council Education Services
Long Term Supply
Long term supply is defined as a notified absence which is expected to last for more than four weeks.
There are a number of reasons for a school requiring long term cover.
- long term absence
- maternity leave
- pending the appointment of a permanent member of staff
- roll related part time appointments
- secondments
All Glasgow schools are provided with additional support for long term cover. The Executive Director (Education, Training & Young People) is responsible for this budget and has the final say if a post has to be filled and by whom.
The criteria used for filling long term appointments will be based on length and quality of service with this authority and with any other education authority.
Short Term Supply
Short term is defined as any cover required from one half day up to four weeks.
There are a number of reasons the school would require short term absence cover.
- short term illness
- curricular development
- inservice training
- school trips
- leave of absence
Each school has a budget allocation for short term supply which amounts to 4 days cover for each member of the teaching staff. This budget runs from the financial year April to March. The head teacher is responsible for the budget and therefore decides when cover will be required for short term absence.
The criteria used for filling short term appointments will be the same as long term. As many short term appointments are usually on the same day cover basis, making yourself available to travel and at short notice, would enhance the possibility of short term work.
You may find it useful to make your availability known to local schools.
