Welcome from Steven Purcell, Leader, Glasgow City Council

I am pleased to invite you, on behalf of Glasgow City Council, to the EUROCITIES Knowledge Society Forum - TeleCities Summer Event 2006, to be held in the City on 7th - 9th June 2006.

Glasgow has undergone positive change in recent years.  Huge investment has taken place in the physical infrastructure of the City.  The economy is thriving and there has been an exceptional increase in the number of jobs available.  The City's image has been radically altered over the past 20 years and we are now known as Glasgow: Scotland with Style.

However the City’s success does not extend to many of its citizens.  We have one of the highest levels of deprivation in the UK.  Since my election as Leader of the Council I have set out a challenge to the Council and its partners that this can and must change and I am determined that it shall.  For this reason I launched the Social Renewal programme last year.

The conference theme will be "Knowledge Society - Social Renewal in Action".  Research shows that access to knowledge or information is a key to continuing development of a vibrant economy and to enhancing the life choices and opportunities of citizens in the 21st Century.  I am therefore delighted to be welcoming a group of leaders in the development of the Knowledge Society to Glasgow and look forward to the outcome of the deliberations.

Best Wishes

Steven Purcell

Leader of the Council

Elected May 2005
