Service update

Essential construction works which started on 13 February 2023 continue to be carried out at Shieldhall Depot. Phase 2 of the works will commence in January 2024 with little or no impact on the Household Waste Recycling Centre for the duration of the works.

As such, the Household Waste Recycling Centre will remain open for business as usual with waste and recycling materials now able to be disposed of into the loft building. Recycling Attendants will be on hand to guide residents accordingly.

Please note that vehicles over 1.8m high remain unable to access the site and should use the Dawsholm Recycling Centre transfer station and report to weighbridge.

From Monday 23 January 2023 Easter Queenslie will be closed to all vehicles over 1.8metres except for those disposing of White Goods and Green Waste. For disposal of Bulk items please use the Dawsholm.

Changes to how we recycle your soft furnishings

Disposing of upholstered seating

We are changing the way we collect and dispose of upholstered seating. This includes any seating items with cushions or padding, such as sofas, office chairs and futons.

If you are bringing upholstered seating to a household waste recycling centre (HWRC) for disposal then please look for the upholstered seating container. If you are unsure or have any queries, please check with a member of staff on site.

Donating upholstered seating for reuse

Undamaged, dry, clean and in good condition upholstered seating that has the relevant fire safety labels can be donated for reuse. Contact your local charity or reuse furniture retailer directly to arrange for your item to be donated so that it can be used by someone else.

Items that are broken, dirty or have ripped padding should be disposed of as waste and placed in the upholstered seating container. If you are unsure or have any queries, please check with a member of staff on site.

Why are we making this change?

Upholstered seating may have been coated with a flame retardant, containing Persistent Organic Pollutants - also referred to as POPs.

POPs present a long-lasting risk to the environment and are found in a variety of products, including soft furnishings. The Scottish Environment Protection Agency requires upholstered seating to be segregated and disposed of appropriately.

Household waste recycling centres will now have a specific container available for the collection of upholstered seating items. If these containers are full, you may be advised to return another time or try another household waste recycling centre.

From 26 February 2024 we have installed separate containers for the safe storage of waste upholstered domestic seating at our Dawsholm, Shieldhall and Polmadie Household Waste Recycling Centres. Please ask staff on arrival who will guide you to the correct storage area.

Household Waste and Recycling Centres facilities

On arrival at the household waste recycling centre, our staff are on hand to help and assist members of the public by ensuring material is deposited appropriately and providing advice and guidance when needed. We ask all residents to treat our staff with respect and adhere to any instruction whilst on site.

Before arrival at any of our household waste recycling centres we ask residents to separate items into different waste types, rather than arriving with a mix of all different materials.

This will help ensure material reaches the proper recycling outlet; otherwise material could become contaminated and fail to be recycled.

Our household waste recycling centre provide recycling outlets for a wide range of common recyclable household materials and we will continue to expand the recycling services we offer to our residents.

HWRC locations and opening hours

All household waste recycling facilities are open Monday - Sunday, 08:00 - 18:00 (last entry 17:45).

The household waste recycling facilities are for Glasgow City Council residents only. Suspected traders may be refused entry.

Cars over 1.8 meters and vans are not permitted to access the household waste recycling facility.

Can I take a van

Easter Queenslie will be closed to all vehicles over 1.8metres except for those disposing of White Goods and Green Waste.

Vans used by residents will be accepted at Dawsholm only between 08:00 - 11:30 and 13:30 - 17:00. Entry will be refused at any other times. This is to enable us to safely manage the number of vans using the centre.

Please do not visit Shieldhall or Polmadie to use a van to transport your household materials as you will be refused entry.

All vans are required to report to the weighbridge and not the main household waste recycling centre entry point. Staff on site will then provide direction to the tipping location.

Can I take commercial waste?

Commercial waste will not be accepted at our Household Waste Recycling Centre.

Commercial Waste must go via the Weighbridge where you will be charged (see Weighbridge below)

All household recycling waste is subject to a visual inspection by on-site staff and you may be asked to provide proof of where the waste came from. Any waste that is suspected to be commercial will not be accepted. You may face enforcement action if an offence has been committed by the depositing of trade or commercial waste at one of our sites.

What can I do at home to improve recycling?

We want to encourage our household waste recycling centre customers to recycle for Glasgow and help us move towards becoming a carbon neutral City.

The key to achieving high rates of good quality recyclable material starts at home. Before arrival at any of our household waste recycling centres we ask all customers to kindly separate your items into different waste types, rather than arriving with a mix of all different materials.

This will help ensure material reaches the proper recycling outlet; otherwise material could become contaminated and fail to be recycled.

Re-use opportunities

It is better for the environment to re-use waste material wherever possible, rather than sending it for recycling, energy recovery or disposal, and there are a wide range of opportunities available to help with this.
