The rateable value is an estimate of the annual rent which a non-residential property would command on the open market. It is determined by the Glasgow City Assessor and entered in the valuation roll.
There is a statutory requirement for the Glasgow City Assessor to carry out a general revaluation every five years. The current valuation roll came into force on 1 April 2017, the Scottish Government has announced that the next revaluation will take effect from 1 April 2022.
When fixing the level of value, the assessor examines the rents passing for all let properties at a date two years prior to the revaluation. For the 2017 revaluation, this date was 1st April 2015.
Your rateable value is used in the calculation of your rates bill by the application of a "rate poundage", which is determined annually.
The amount of rates due for each property is determined by multiplying the rateable value of the property by the rate poundage.
The rate poundage is determined by the Scottish Government and is set at £0.48 for the financial year 2018/19.
An additional supplement of £0.026 has been added to those properties that have a rateable value of more than £51,000.
For the financial year 2017/18, the rate poundage was set at £0.466 with an additional supplement of £0.026 for properties that have a rateable value of more than £51,000.
