A large proportion of casualties in Glasgow involve someone who is driving for work purposes.
To target this section of driver, we have developed 'Drive Safe - It's Your Business' in partnership with Police Scotland and the Scottish Occupational Road Safety Alliance (SCORSA).
In order for Glasgow to meet and exceed the Scottish Government road casualty targets, it is essential that we focus our resources to target those road users classed as vulnerable and/or high risk.
In terms of the high risk category, over the past five years, nearly half of all fatal and a quarter of all serious injury accidents in Glasgow have involved an 'at work vehicle' - this figure does not include company cars and small vans and therefore the recorded figures are likely to be far higher.
To address this the Road Safety Development Officer has been working in partnership with NHS healthy Working Lives, The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, the Scottish Occupational Road Safety Alliance and others to develop a new resource, Drive Safe it's Your Business, which has been designed to encourage businesses in Glasgow (and Scotland) to develop and manage a road risk policy.
A road risk policy is the foundation document upon which a company, regardless of size, can communicate and implement policies and training to improve road safety within their organisation and thereby reduce the likelihood of their employees being involved in a crash and the associated costs to the business.
The resource itself consists of a carefully worded online questionnaire which, when completed, will provide each individual company with an action plan on how to develop their own bespoke road risk policy.
All the partners involved will offer a number of free resources, which includes a personal visit from NHS Healthy Working Lives.
This is the first project of its type and Transport Scotland would like to support the scheme by introducing a new national fleet safety award for those organisations taking part.
