Geodiversity
What is it?
Geodiversity is defined as "the variety of rocks, minerals, fossils, landforms, sediments and soils, together with the natural processes which form and alter them". It is the foundation upon which plants, animals and people live, a source of basic raw materials, and a vital component of our cultural and built heritage.
The Local Development Plan Main Issues Report proposed a study to ascertain whether there were geological features in the City worthy of protection, and the Council subsequently commissioned the British Geological Survey (BGS) to audit and assess the geodiversity of Glasgow.
The audit identifies a number of sites considered worthy of protection.
